UMPC (ultra mobile PC) is recently wide spread at the end of 2007 and early 2008. Many famous and new computer hardware manufacturer create their UMPC product with its unique features. UMPC is designed for mobile with its light weight n small size and has a specialized features, and more cheaper than previous notebook concept. But of
course you may not expecting the notebook concept features, because the UMPC is designed to be a compact and small to carry and it is dedicated to mobile person, but not possible for educational purpose.
So, I may conclude that UMPC :
The advantages :
- Smaller than notebook and of course light and it is more comfortable to carry.
Most of UMPC equiped with WiFi, USB, VGA output for presentation and some of them has a webcam for video conference purpose. - Some of UMPC has special features which notebook doesn’t have for the example : most of them have a Flash/SSD technology for its hard disk. This technology is more shake or vibrate proof than the ordinary hard disk which using disk and vacuum. Another example of the application of flash technology is USB flash disk, MMCard, Transflash/MicroSD.
- It is cheaper than notebook concept, but it depends on UMPC specification and manufacuturer. Some of UMPC is more expensive than some notebook, and of course this UMPC has better components specification than notebook. For example UMPC made by Fujitsu, hp, etc
The disadvantages :
- Because its size (small), it has a lack of features but it is enough for mobile purpose. UMPC mostly doesn’t equiped with ROM drives (CD/DVDROM/RW)
- Again because its size, the size of LCD is small, as I know right now the smallest is 7 inch (Asus eee, Zyrex Anoa, etc). It is not comfortable when I’m dealing with document file (office, word, xl, pdf file). It seem you must use microscope to read it ).
- The keyboard is small and it is not comfortable especialy for someone who have a big finger
